T1158: Hidden Files and Directories

mitre-persistence | Level: Easy  | Total Lab Runs: 0 | Premium Lab

Lab Scoreboard

Hidden Files and Directories can be used by adversaries to hide files on the system for persistence and evading a typical user or system analysis that does not incorporate the investigation of hidden files.

In this lab, we are given SSH access on the target machine. The flag is not on the machine yet and will only be available after the "wait" file present in student user's home directory is deleted. However, the deletion of this file will change the admin user's password and restart SSH. Hence, to retrieve the flag, we have to maintain access to admin user's account on the target system.

Initial SSH Credentials

UsernamePassword
studentpassword
admin
secret

Your mission:

  1. Maintain access on admin user's account after the credentials are modified. Leverage the hidden directory present in the home directory of student user.
  2. Retrieve flag from target machine.

Technical Support for this Lab:

There is a reason we provide unlimited lab time: you can take as much time as you need to solve a lab. However, we realize that sometimes hints might be necessary to keep you motivated!

We currently provide technical support limited to:

  • Giving hints for a lab exercise
  • In rare circumstances, if you have totally given up (NO!!!) then tell you how to solve it. This will be limited to sharing the solution video or lab report
  • A lab exercise fails to load or has errors in it

If you need technical support, please email  attackdefense@pentesteracademy.com  clearly mention the name and link of the lab exercise and other essential details. The more descriptive you are, the faster we can help you. We will get back to you within 24 hours or less.
