Lab Walkthrough Video:

Securing an API is a critical task. A poor API design may lead to system compromise. Its impact becomes more critical when the attacker gets control over the underlying system.

A group of university students have created a Simple Cat Command Wrapper WebApp that was deployed on their university server. The WebApp accepts a filename from the user and provides the contents of that file (if it exists).

The issue is that the developers had not sanitized user input and passed the user-supplied commands directly to the system() function.

Objective: Leverage the vulnerability to get the Golden Ticket!

Instructions:

  • This lab is dedicated to you! No other users are on this network :)
  • Once you start the lab, you will have access to a Kali GUI instance.
  • Your Kali instance has an interface with IP address 192.X.Y.2. Run "ifconfig" to know the values of X and Y.
  • The Cat Wrapper WebApp is running on port 5000 on the target machine having IP address 192.X.Y.3.
  • The Golden Ticket is stored in a file named as "This_Is_The_Golden_Ticket_XXXXXXXX".
  • Do not attack the gateway located at IP address 192.X.Y.1

Verify:
1. Golden Ticket
