Lab Walkthrough Video:

In some environments, it is required that the docker daemon is accessible remotely. In such cases, the docker daemon is configured to listen over TCP socket. But as the docker daemon doesn't support authentication, exposing it over TCP will allow anyone on the internet to locate and abuse it. And, we already know that a privileged container can lead to compromise of the host machine.

The admin aware of this risk, deployed a docker authorization plugin to prevent misuse of the exposed docker socket. The plugin allows interaction with the docker daemon only if a particular bypass token is either present in the request headers or is passed as an environment variable with the docker command (--env or -e option). However, as the bypass token is passed in the environment variable, the compromise of a running container could reveal the bypass token required to interact with the docker daemon.

Objective:
Compromise the web application container, retrieve the bypass token and interact with the docker daemon. Then, run a privileged container and retrieve the flag!

You might need the following credentials for exploitation:

UsernamePassword

password1

Instructions:

  • This lab is dedicated to you! No other users are on this network :)
  • Once you start the lab, you will have access to a root terminal of a Kali instance
  • Your Kali has an interface with IP address 192.X.Y.2. Run "ip addr" to know the values of X and Y.
  • The target server should be located at the IP address 192.X.Y.3.
  • Do not attack the gateway located at IP address 192.X.Y.1
  • postgresql is not running by default so Metasploit may give you an error. Ignore it.

Verify:

Technical Support for this Lab:

There is a reason we provide unlimited lab time: you can take as much time as you need to solve a lab. However, we realize that sometimes hints might be necessary to keep you motivated!

We currently provide technical support limited to:

  • Giving hints for a lab exercise
  • In rare circumstances, if you have totally given up (NO!!!) then tell you how to solve it. This will be limited to sharing the solution video or lab report
  • A lab exercise fails to load or has errors in it

If you need technical support, please email  attackdefense@pentesteracademy.com  clearly mention the name and link of the lab exercise and other essential details. The more descriptive you are, the faster we can help you. We will get back to you within 24 hours or less.
