Instance Metadata Service Version 2

cloud-services-amazon-ec2 | Level: Easy  | Total Lab Runs: 0 | Premium Lab

Lab Scoreboard

Applications deployed on EC2 instances might require interaction with other AWS resources such as DynamoDB, S3 buckets, etc. On EC2 instances, this is facilitated with the help of instance metadata service (IMDS). The credentials of an instance profile associated with the instance can be retrieved by interacting with IMDS.

Attackers are constantly scanning the IP ranges, looking for vulnerable applications running on EC2 instances. Compromising such a machine can provide them with computation power to perform other attacks and more importantly, it can provide them a foothold inside an AWS account.

In this lab, you are provided terminal based access to an EC2 instance. The instance has IMDSv2 enabled and there is also an S3 bucket on the same AWS account with sensitive information.

Objective: Interact with the instance metadata service and retrieve the flag from the S3 bucket.

  • Click on RUN to start the lab (takes approximately 25s).

Technical Support for this Lab:

There is a reason we provide unlimited lab time: you can take as much time as you need to solve a lab. However, we realize that sometimes hints might be necessary to keep you motivated!

We currently provide technical support limited to:

  • Giving hints for a lab exercise
  • In rare circumstances, if you have totally given up (NO!!!) then tell you how to solve it. This will be limited to sharing the solution video or lab report
  • A lab exercise fails to load or has errors in it

If you need technical support, please email  clearly mention the name and link of the lab exercise and other essential details. The more descriptive you are, the faster we can help you. We will get back to you within 24 hours or less.
